Synopsis
Brom Of Bresail is a sword for hire. Along with his two companions Terrell and Voskren, his reputation is known throughout the country. This attracts the attention of the Wizard Vaecordia, who sends a mysterious messenger to bring Brom to him.
Brom comes to Vaecordia's chamber, and agrees to protect Vaecordia from the dangers of the Blackwoods and the treachery of his enemy Ymidryll, a fellow wizard. Vaecordia must go to Ymidryll's castle to engage in a wizard's duel, and does not trust his promise of safe passage.
The journey through the Blackwoods soon takes a deadly turn. when Ymidryll sends his beast guards against the party. While hunting for food, Brom saves a Dryad from Ymidryll's guards, a Dryad he knows from his past,. She warns him that more guards are about to attack the encampment and he rushes back. Before he leaves, the Dryad gives him a medallion that protects the wearer from magic.
When he returns to the camp, the beast guards are attacking. Brom, Voskren and Terrell battle the beast guards and finally kill all of them but Terrell is killed as well. Vaecordia, not wanting to weaken his magic, refuses to assist in the battle, which infuriates Brom.
The rest of the trip to the castle is uneventful, but upon entering the castle, Vaecordia and Brom are invited up to Vaecordia's chambers. The two wizards trade insults and then prepare for their battle. Brom takes cover and the battle begins.
Fire, smoke, water and lightning flash back and forth from wizard to wizard. Ymidryll pulls an object from the folds of his robe and hurls it on the ground, shattering it and releasing a demon, something that Vaecordia's magic cannot effect. Vaecordia calls for Brom's help, and Brom engages the demon in battle but soon comes to realize that this was planned by the wizards.
The medallion casts a glow on the demon and releases the demon from his spell of control. Realizing that he too was tricked, they stop fighting each other and concentrate on the wizards. The demon dispatches Vaecordia and Brom threatens Ymidryll. The medallion deflects his magic and Ymidryll realizes too late that the medallion Brom wears came from the Dryad he has tried to capture. Brom reveals to Ymidryll that the Dryad is his aunt and that another Dryad Ymidryll killed years before was his mother. Brom then kills Ymidryll, finally having his revenge.
A time later, Brom, along with Voskren and their new companion, the demon now called Lyhir, listen to Brom as he tells them of a great treasure to be had in the south... and a new adventure.
